AbstractThis paper investigates the impacts of product innovations and process innovations on the skill premium empirically. The hypothesis is that product innovations are skill-complementing: product innovations increase the demand for skilled workers, while process innovations are skill-replacing: process innovations increase the demand for unskilled workers. Using a novel data set from Eurostat, this paper finds that the skill premium, as measured by the relative income of college educated workers to high school graduates, is positively correlated with product innovations while negatively correlated with process innovations, after controlling for the supply of skills. This empirical finding is in accordance with previous theories and anecdotal stories regarding the labour market consequences of different types of innovations.
